Real Madrid arrive in LA | July 21, 2014
The team landed at LAX jus before 4:15 pm local time (1:15 in Madrid). The players used the more than 12-hour flight to relax, read, listen to music, watch movies, and play cards.
They will remain at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills for the first part of the trip. At this time there is no news of the team’s accommodations for the remainder of the tour.
Fábio Coentrão, Pepe, and Xabi Alonso cut their holidays short to travel with the team despite having a couple extra days off. Unfortunately, it looks like Cristiano Ronaldo may be postponing his arrival until Saturday. Marca reports he will continue receiving treatment on his knee.

UEFA News

Two Real Madrid players are shortlisted for the Best Player in Europe award.

  • Ángel di María
  • Cristiano Ronaldo

Also receiving votes were Sergio Ramos (11), Gareth Bale (19), and Karim Benzema (24). The three finalists will be named on August 14. The award will be handed out on August 28, during the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco.

In disciplinary news, Xabi Alonso has been handed a one-match ban for his incident during May’s Champions League final. His suspension will go into effect for his next eligible match, August 12’s Super Cup against Sevilla.

In addition, the club has been fined €18,000 for improper team conduct (5+ yellow cards) and for improper conduct of supporters (setting off fireworks).

Edited to add:

UEFA’s Emergency Panel ruled today that effective immediately, yellow cards from the start of the group stage will be wiped at the completion of the quarter-finals.

Therefore, bookings will not carry over in the semi-finals. This ruling means players won’t be in danger of missing the final due to yellow card accumulation, e.g. Xabi Alonso last season.

In WTF news, Globoesporte reports a boy named Yago Leal broke into Cristiano Ronaldo’s Brasilia hotel room Wednesday night. Somehow the 15 year old evaded hotel security and found his way into Cristiano’s room through the balcony.
Leal waited on the bed for Ronaldo to return because “he knew he laid on it”. Despite the scare, Cristiano decided not to call the police. He even signed an autograph and allowed the boy to take a picture before letting him leave the way he entered. [via]

The internet has run wild with a rumor that Cristiano Ronaldo’s new haircut is styled as a tribute to Erik Ortiz Cruz, a boy who had allegedly just been operated on to treat cortical dysplasia. The new design was said to honor the scar left behind from Erik’s surgery.
Cristina, Erik’s mother, took to Facebook on Monday evening to flatly deny this claim. In her post she clarified that Erik has not yet had his surgery, but she did reconfirm Ronaldo’s intent to pay a portion of the operation’s cost once that day comes.
Despite the rumor, Cristina is and will continue to be “eternally grateful” to Ronaldo for the kindness he has shown her son. | ©

I don’t want to defend myself with my injuries, I think I’m over them. I’m here, I have to face the music and everything that I have is not worth talking about any more: news about my knee, my tendonitis has been in the papers every day… but I don’t want to hide behind that, I’m here in body and spirit for the team.

About 12 minutes into Cristiano Ronaldo’s movie, I realize I just threw $5 down the drain.

To set this short clip up, this is supposedly a reenactment of Sir Alex Ferguson convincing Ronaldo to join Manchester United and wear the #7 jersey. Mind you, Cristiano joined United from Sporting Lisbon, as in Lisbon, Portugal. [You can read how the transfer really happened here.]
