An ESPN Magazine and Sporting Intelligence survey has named the best-paid athletes in the world. According to the survey, the average annual pay “is calculated from base player salaries from current or most recently completed seasons from each sport.” Endorsements, bonuses, etc. were not included in the totals.

Forty-nine teams had a player, who on average earned at least $20 million a year since 2009. Real Madrid comes second on that list (behind Barcelona) with $37 million per player.

The survey also included the teams with the highest payroll. Real Madrid is second. Also, three of the world’s top five highest paid athletes come from soccer (football).

Injury updates

Injury update: AS reports that yesterday Cristiano Ronaldo traveled to the Saude de Boavista Clinic in Porto to get a second assessment. An MRI taken in Madrid on Wednesday is said to have shown a one-centimeter tear in his left hamstring.

AS claims that the player is hopeful that intense physio treatments will shorten his recovery time from the reported two weeks. Cristiano’s rehab is in the hands of Joaquín Juan, considered the third best physiotherapist in the world. Juan comes as a recommendation from Ángel di María, who he treated in March 2012.

Carlo Ancelotti addressed Ronaldo’s injury concerns in today’s press conference. “[He] isn’t available tomorrow. We tried to get him back for the second leg in Dortmund, but he felt it and is now receiving treatment. I don’t know if he can play on Wednesday. We have to wait and see if he can recover.”

"I have spoken with him. He’s not happy because it is an important part of the season. If he isn’t 100% he won’t play. He wanted to play in Dortmund, and we tried but he wasn’t comfy and for this we let him continue his recovery."

"The knee problem has complicated the muscle problem. We think it came about in the first leg against Dortmund. He was a little injured and if he can play in the cup final it means it isn’t a big injury."

Injury updates

- Cristiano Ronaldo:The club confirmed a left hamstring injury, in addition to the tendonitis he has been nursing in his left knee. A medical evaluation is pending, but it seems unlikely that he will feature against Almería. A return for the Copa del Rey final may not be in the cards either because there are concerns he may have a small muscle tear, according to Cuatro and AS.

Manu Sainz offers a tiny ray of hope after he spoke with doctors about the possibility of a small tear. In theory it would be possible for Cristiano to play in the Copa final without problems, if he wore heavy taping similar to Gareth Bale. However, a two-week sideline is the general consensus. If that is the case, a return in the first leg of the UCL semi-final is in doubt. Update

- Marcelo: He has been sidelined since April 1 with a hamstring tear. He went in for a check-up Wednesday and appears to be coming along nicely. Marcelo was present at Thursday’s training, so there is a slight possibility he could be available for Saturday’s game against Almería, although it appears that the objective is the Copa final on April 16.

- Jesé: Marca reports that Jesé is still receiving treatment in Augsburg for a knee infection. A series of arthroscopies have been scheduled to alleviate the problem, and he could return to Madrid by the end of the week. In principle, the infection shouldn’t have increased his recovery time.

- Álvaro Arbeloa: The club posted a summary of his recovery routine. Although there is no official return date, he seems to be on track for a hypothetical UCL final. [+]

- Sami Khedira: There haven’t been any updates to his condition since late last month.
