The Competition Committee ruled that Cristiano Ronaldo will serve a one match suspension for a red card offense and one for yellow card accumulation; José Mourinho will miss two. Both suspensions apply in the Copa del Rey.
According to the RFEF, Ronaldo violated Article 123 (violent play) of the disciplinary code by kicking at an opponent with no intention to play the ball. Mourinho was sanctioned for protesting to an official (Article 120).
Edited to add: AS is reporting that Mourinho’s suspensions could carry over to the FA Cup if he coaches with Chelsea. [That seems a stretch to me, though.]
The RFEF Competition Committee will meet Tuesday to determine the severity of Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card offense. According to the referee’s match report, he was sent off at 115’ for “striking the face of his rival with his foot, with no intention to play the ball.”
Two sanctions can be applied:
2-match ban minimum, applied in same competition (Copa del Rey)
4-match ban minimum, applied in the next 4 domestic matches *
The more strict penalty would mean Ronaldo would miss the final 2 league matches and then the first 2 next season.
* AS believes that there is a possibility that the Competition Committee may only apply a 2-match ban, given that it is the end of the season.
