UEFA News

Two Real Madrid players are shortlisted for the Best Player in Europe award.

  • Ángel di María
  • Cristiano Ronaldo

Also receiving votes were Sergio Ramos (11), Gareth Bale (19), and Karim Benzema (24). The three finalists will be named on August 14. The award will be handed out on August 28, during the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco.

In disciplinary news, Xabi Alonso has been handed a one-match ban for his incident during May’s Champions League final. His suspension will go into effect for his next eligible match, August 12’s Super Cup against Sevilla.

In addition, the club has been fined €18,000 for improper team conduct (5+ yellow cards) and for improper conduct of supporters (setting off fireworks).

Edited to add:

UEFA’s Emergency Panel ruled today that effective immediately, yellow cards from the start of the group stage will be wiped at the completion of the quarter-finals.

Therefore, bookings will not carry over in the semi-finals. This ruling means players won’t be in danger of missing the final due to yellow card accumulation, e.g. Xabi Alonso last season.

Injury update

Carlo Ancelotti told the press in Tuesday’s address that the two players who were the most doubtful for Saturday’s final were Pepe and Karim Benzema.

"I’m a realist and as of today they can’t play. There are four days left and we’ll make our final decision. If Pepe can’t play, Varane can take his place. As for Benzema, we can understand that the player isn’t at 100%, but if he has injury problems, it’s better if he doesn’t play. If we don’t think he’s risking an injury he’ll play."

- Ronaldo (hamstring) - trained normally Thursday; expected to play

- Benzema (groin) - still hasn’t trained with team; will reportedly undergo another test on Friday to see how his adductor responds

- Pepe (calf) - hasn’t trained with team; reportedly almost certain to miss the final

Injury update

- Cristiano Ronaldo: The official word from Ancelotti is that a test revealed a “minor muscle spasm”. They didn’t want to risk anything, so Ronaldo was replaced in the starting XI. He should recover from the pulled hamstring muscle in time for the final.

“Cristiano wasn’t comfortable before the game. Yesterday he trained well and was confident. We didn’t risk him; he has had a test and it looks like a minor spasm. We’re relaxed because he has time to recover and play in the final. He hasn’t played in the last few matches. It wasn’t a risk because he trained normally yesterday and was full of confidence”.

“When the medical test doesn’t show anything, the player’s own judgment is very important. He was comfortable and happy yesterday. He wanted to play. He wasn’t right in the warm up and we decided to not use him in this match to avoid risking anything. The problem is that when you have a final coming up you can’t take risks. If it had been our last match of the season, he would have played. With such an important final coming up we didn’t need to take any risks. Cristiano is very sincere”.

- Karim Benzema: He has a “minor abductor contracture" (pulled groin). Ancelotti doesn’t expect Karim to miss the final.
