RM: Post-Villarreal Comments (3.21.12)

Marcelo: “You saw what happened & how many of us were sent off. We must do our job. It was a difficult match against a complicated opponent. We took one point & must continue working hard.”

“There’s no pressure, & any team would like to be where we are now. We’re fine. We didn’t win, but we’re in good spirits. We have to improve on things. We conceded a set piece goal, but we’ll continue to work.”

Sergio Ramos seems to be having issues with his back & will be replaced by Varane.

ETA. Guess he’s overcome it. He’ll be starting after all. *whew*

“I am very happy about equaling Zarra and Hugo Sánchez’s record. The truth is I didn’t expect to score so many goals this year and I feel honored to reach two legends like Zarra and Hugo Sánchez. What really matters is that we earned a great victory at a complicated venue. All of us, coach and players alike, want to have a good end to the season, and we’re accomplishing this so far.”“I would like to score even more goals against Almería, but I’m not obsessed about it. I’ve tried to score from set pieces many times this year, but had been unlucky until now.”“I’m happy both on a personal and collective level because the entire team is performing well. We play at a high level and score many goals. There may be nothing at stake for us any more, but Real Madrid always work hard to win.”

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two extraordinary set piece goals against Villarreal that allowed him to equal Zarra and Hugo Sánchez’s historic record of 38 strikes in one season in La Liga. He will have a chance to break it against Almería. The Portuguese’s incredible run during the present campaign makes him the favourite to win this year’s Golden Boot award. Ronaldo’s goals helped Real Madrid earn a sixth straight away victory with one game left in the championship.
