Training | April 11, 2014

The squad completed their final pre-Almería session with a few absences. Alonso was given the day off. Marcelo trained indoors; the injured Khedira, Jesé and Ronaldo continued their own recoveries.  Arbeloa stepped onto the training pitch for Ancelotti’s technical chat before exercising with the handbike.

Squad list

Absences: Alonso, Carvajal (suspension) | Arbeloa, Jesé, Khedira, Marcelo, Ronaldo (injury)

Ancelotti press conference [+]

- Marcelo, who wasn’t called up, should be back soon.

- key to the Dortmund loss was the missed penalty; there was too much criticism on the team

- “I heard that Klopp wanted the first leg on DVD so our performance in Madrid must have been worthy of an Oscar.”

- Illarra will replace Alonso (suspended) in the starting XI.

- on the UCL SF: “The Champions League draw is good because we’re in it. We’ll play against a difficult side, with individual and collective quality. Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the world and it is a side with a lot of experience. It will be a difficult game for us, but also for them too.”

News

- The club will play Bayern Munich in the Champions League SF; this is the 4th consecutive SF for RM.

Injury updates

- Cristiano Ronaldo:The club confirmed a left hamstring injury, in addition to the tendonitis he has been nursing in his left knee. A medical evaluation is pending, but it seems unlikely that he will feature against Almería. A return for the Copa del Rey final may not be in the cards either because there are concerns he may have a small muscle tear, according to Cuatro and AS.

Manu Sainz offers a tiny ray of hope after he spoke with doctors about the possibility of a small tear. In theory it would be possible for Cristiano to play in the Copa final without problems, if he wore heavy taping similar to Gareth Bale. However, a two-week sideline is the general consensus. If that is the case, a return in the first leg of the UCL semi-final is in doubt. Update

- Marcelo: He has been sidelined since April 1 with a hamstring tear. He went in for a check-up Wednesday and appears to be coming along nicely. Marcelo was present at Thursday’s training, so there is a slight possibility he could be available for Saturday’s game against Almería, although it appears that the objective is the Copa final on April 16.

- Jesé: Marca reports that Jesé is still receiving treatment in Augsburg for a knee infection. A series of arthroscopies have been scheduled to alleviate the problem, and he could return to Madrid by the end of the week. In principle, the infection shouldn’t have increased his recovery time.

- Álvaro Arbeloa: The club posted a summary of his recovery routine. Although there is no official return date, he seems to be on track for a hypothetical UCL final. [+]

- Sami Khedira: There haven’t been any updates to his condition since late last month.

Injury update: [+] Jesé made an appearance at the club’s training facilities Wednesday morning. He was there to meet with the medical staff and to also thank his teammates for their outpouring of support.

A few reported cases of those warm gestures included club president Pérez going down to the locker room to inquire about Jesé’s condition. Also, Ronaldo is said to have run into the locker room at halftime to check in as well. Arbeloa and his wife were seen leaving the Bernabéu to meet Jesé at the hospital.

A club statement read that Jesé would be traveling to Augsberg, Germany later that day to have his torn ACL treated by Dr. Ulrich Boenisch. Boenisch is the surgeon who performed Sami Khedira’s MCL/ACL surgery back in November. More information on Jesé’s recovery should come once the operation has been completed, but many reports expect a minimum of six months.

Injury update: Álvaro Arbeloa spoke about his knee injury at a Yahoo event Thursday afternoon. Stress at the joint resulted in a small 2 mm patellar crack. Although it’s not painful, he wears a brace that helps him lead a completely normal life. He is just unable to train and compete naturally.

He denied earlier interpretations of his injury, which assumed he would miss out on this summer’s World Cup. “My intention is to recover from this setback and even be able to help my team in a possible Champions League final, then help Spain in the World Cup if called up.

With respect to Dani Carvajal, Arbeloa stated the rotation at right back was good for the club. “I was in good form before this injury. Dani is a great player, and the competition is good because every day you have to demand more of yourself. The mister has felt it appropriate to rotate the position, and it’s working out.”

The majority of the internationals were present for the third practice of the week. Alonso trained indoors with Pepe (stomach flu), who also split his time on the training pitch. Khedira still continues his recovery.

Both Illarra and club president Pérez share a birthday and were greeted by the team before Saturday’s training began. Alonso and Pepe were able to train at the same rate as their teammates, but Arbeloa was unable to train because of a knee injury.

Ancelotti press conference [+]

- Pepe (stomach bug) was called up for Levante but may not play.

- Arbeloa’s injury is unlucky; he will rest for a few days before attempting to train.

- Isco has shown recently that he can play in the team’s preferred formation and is closer to starting because of that. Ancelotti even compared him to Seedorf, who was in a similar situation at AC Milan.

News

- Illarra turns 24. This is how he spent part of his break from earlier in the week. Ancelotti said he’s apologized for it.

- Zidane to El Confidencial: “I enjoy [being a coach]. It’s what I want to do. When I stopped playing football I went on to do a lot of different things. But in the end you have to come back to the thing that gives you energy and that gives you life. If possible, you should do what you want and, for me, that’s football. I think it’s the place in which I can contribute something, transmit what I feel and what I know.”

- Varane’s surgeon reportedly says the player is fully recovered and can resume playing twice a week.

- Florentino Pérez was a guest on La Sexta’s Salvados, which will air Sunday. When asked by the host if he had any involvement in the Neymar transfer saga he replied with a smile, “You know perfectly that I did not. And it seems ridiculous to me to answer that.”

- The team had dinner at El Espigón around 8:30 Thursday night. Ancelotti told the press he was invited and that Zizou paid. Ramos made the reservation, and only four players were absent: Alonso, Arbeloa, Khedira and Pepe. The technical staff was there as well, and the restaurant owner commented on the good atmosphere at the dinner. Jesé and Isco left together, as did Ronaldo and Ramos. A partial seating chart is here. Injury update: It’s being reported that Álvaro Arbeloa has a cracked patella (knee cap) and will miss three weeks. He had been training with a bandage all week (as seen in the image above from Friday’s session) but could not continue due to the pain.
There is no official word from the club at this time but if the timeline holds, he would not be available before the Champions League quarter-finals in early April. The club’s statement reads that Álvaro has an avulsion of his inferior patellar pole. The medical staff will continue to monitor his situation.
Update (March 13, 2014) -
Reports from La Sexta and allegedly the player himself estimate a two-month layoff. The injury is more serious that previously thought and could effectively end his season and rule out his participation in the World Cup.
There has been no confirmation from the club at this time.
